Christmas Blessings

Visit My Mail Stamp!
Seasons Greetings and Welcome to the December 2007 edition of the
SOS Porch Light newsletter!

This is the time of year when the spirit of Christmas takes over and makes everything look bright, shiny and new. No matter where we go or what we do, the holiday spirit entraps us like a big beautiful blanket and buffers us from the negative forces of life. There's a sense of hope and renewal as we look toward the new year and a fresh start.

At Christmastime, our hearts are full of good intentions while our senses get "jazzed," with an overload of things to see, smell, hear, taste and touch. We gaze at the lights; sing-a-long to our favorite carols; take-in the heavenly aromas of baked cookies and scented candles; indulge in our favorite comfort foods; and go heavy on the hugs. And, let's not forget the retail therapy and power shopping!

In addition to the obvious joy and merriment, we cannot truly appreciate Christmas without paying attention to our spiritual needs. It is the birth of the Christ child that reigns at the heart of our celebrations and continues to remind us of what is truly important in our lives. In the end, it's all about love for mankind, which is the greatest gift of all.

May you and your loved ones have a very happy and blessed Christmas.

HOLIDAY TIPS & TREATS

Cookies From the Kitchen: Chocolate Pretzels

2 bags chocolate chips (dark or milk chocolate)
1 bag pretzels (logs work well for this, but you
can try any of the medium to thick variety of twists)
Chopped nuts, for garnish, optional
Colored nonpareils, for garnish, optional
Sprinkles, for garnish, optional
Coconut, for garnish, optional
Crushed cookies, for garnish, optional

Melt chocolate in double boiler over medium heat on stove top. Using tongs,
or your fingers, quickly dip pretzels in chocolate allowing the excess to run off. Place dipped pretzels on waxed paper lined cookie sheets. Sprinkle with chopped nuts, colored sugars or other toppings. Allow to harden. You may need to refrigerate for a while to help this along. Once hardened, remove from sheets and store in a cool location, with waxed paper between layers.
Tip: Package pretzels in clear cellophane bags or in vase for festive gift giving!

For the Table: Photo Place Cards

Printing a snapshot of each guest next to his or her name is a perfect way to honor your nearest and dearest — as well as an instant conversation starter to break the ice for guests who won't already know everyone at the table.

Here's how to make it happen:

1. Buy place cards designed to be used with a printer at an office supply store.

2. Scan snapshots or gather digital photos of all of your guests.

3. Using Microsoft Word, go to the Tools menu and select "Letters and Mailings," then "Envelopes and Labels." Click on the "Options" button and select your place cards' product number. Click on "New Document."

4. The cursor will automatically move to where you'll add a guest's photo and name. Insert a guest's picture by going to the "Insert menu" and selecting "Picture," then "From File." Browse for the image you want, then click on the "Insert" button.

5. Type the guest's name next to the photo. If you need a special font, do a Web search for "free fonts" and download one.

6. Print!

ORIGINAL POST BEGINS HERE

Welcome to the November edition of the SOS Porch Light newsletter!

As the year rolls to an end and the holidays are upon us, it is the perfect time to reflect on the many blessings in our lives. It is a time to be grateful and give thanks for our families, our friends, our freedoms, our jobs and, above all, our health.

Individually, we all have our unique ways of ushering in the season, but collectively we are mindful of how the fragility of our physical well-being can have a huge impact on what is typically a very joyful time of year.

One year ago, I had the displeasure of undergoing treatment during the holidays and "wilted" when I should have "sparkled." Many of you also know the frustration of not being able to partake in family traditions, travel to holiday destinations or indulge in the decadent foods you crave simply because ongoing treatment prevented you from doing so.

This season, as we venture in and out of grocery stores, department stores and toy stores, let us not take for granted that it is by the grace of God that we continue to make memories with our loved ones not only during the holidays, but all year round. And, after endless hours in the kitchen putting together a very ambitious Thanksgiving meal, let us say a silent prayer of thanks for the opportunity to know, love and serve with a sense of purpose, for another season of giving....and another year of life.

May you and your loved ones have a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving.

MONTHLY CONTRIBUTION:

This month's contribution comes from Marsha Yeager. It is an article first published in the Wall Street Journal on 9/18/07 and has been submitted in follow-up to a recent discussion at a previous SOS meeting. The following is a summary, but the full article can be read in its entirety at: http://www.today.com/view/novartis-drug-curbs-repeat-hip-fractures-wall-street-journal/id-424623/

Novartis Drug Curbs Repeat Hip Fractures
by David Armstrong

A variation of a drug commonly given to cancer patients with bone damage appears to be an effective tool for preventing repeat hip fractures in elderly patients, according to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study results, which were to be presented yesterday in Hawaii, have potentially big implications because hip fractures are a common and debilitating injury for older people. Most of the 300,000 hip fractures each year in the U.S. are related to osteoporosis in older people, as well as falls, according to an editorial accompanying the study. Older people who fracture their hips are more likely to have second fractures and repeat fractures.

.....The rate of new fractures in the Reclast group was lower than that of the placebo group...The Reclast group also lived longer...The risk of death was reduced 28% in the Reclast group, where 101 people died, compared with 141 in the placebo group. The study tracked 187 patients for nearly two years and the average age of the study participants was 74.

...In the accompanying editorial, pharmacists from the National Institute of Health and the University of Maryland called the study results 'powerful and compelling.'

Reclast is a bisphosphonate, a class of drug that includes Fosamax, which is made by Merck & Co. and has the active ingredient zoledronic acid, which is the same active ingredient in Zomeda, another drug from Novartis...Zomeda is given to cancer patients with bone damage and works by increasing bone mass. ....Reclast was approved by the FDA this year to treat osteoporosis in women.

Proposition 15 Update
From Diane Balma, Managing Director
Susan G. Komen for the Cure Advocacy Alliance

As Texans, we have taken the fight against cancer into our own hands. With the overwhelming passage of Proposition 15, Texas is poised to become the leader in cancer research.
With the passage of Prop 15, Texas will create $3 billion in General Obligation bonds over 10 years for cancer prevention and research in our state. This is double the funding Texas receives from the Federal government each year for cancer research. It will also help ensure that the research funded will be made available to patients in the most efficient manner possible.

The passage of this unique and significant measure is a testament to the power of grassroots activism and the support of people like you. It is also a result of bipartisan support among policymakers and partnership among advocacy organizations, including Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, American Cancer Society, the Texas Medical Association and others.

A huge "thank you" to each of you for your part in making the dream of a cure one step closer to a reality. Your help in spreading the word and getting the message out to voters made this happen!

At our last SOS meeting Rosemary Herron presented the idea of having our annual Christmas party/ornament exchange at "Serenitea." Everyone seemed excited at the prospect of doing something different this year. In order to pursue this idea, we need to have a minimum of 10 ladies to "hold" our reservation. For a flat fee of $15 this cute restaurant will serve us ice tea, a meal, and dessert (includes gratuitity). Therefore, I need to know this week (deadline is Sunday, October 28) if you are interested in attending this evening event scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 11 @ 7 p.m. "Serenitea" is in the Sugar Creek shopping center (where Gerland's is located) by the SW Freeway. Welcome to the October edition of the SOS Porch Light!

As survivors everywhere come together in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are reminded of our personal committment to the SOS Support Group as well as the community at large. This was most evident at the recent 2007 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure where several members of our unit were spotted throughout the day. Rosemary Herron (in delicious candy-pink wig) held post at the Komen Education Booth, and walkers/runners Melanie Frederick, Emily Snyder and yours truly were greeted by cheers and smiles at the 5K finish line.

While the events and days in October remain plentiful, it is up to each of us as individuals to set our goals and put forth our best effort in lending our support. If each of us contributed a few hours this month to attend just one event, what a huge difference it would make. Remember in helping others, we also help ourselves.

Passing The Torch

REVISED 10/3/2007 - Post Meeting

Welcome to the first edition of the SOS Porch Light for the new 2007 - 2008 meeting season! We trust you all had a happy and healthy summer as we look forward to the holidays and coming months ahead.

It was great sharing meals with so many of you during June, July & August at our no-host gatherings. Let's see, we enjoyed burgers at Johnny Rockets, seafood at Fish City Grill and gelato at the Black Walnut Cafe....Not too shabby!

As we welcome all members to the first meeting of the new season, you'll notice a few changes have taken place. And as a reflection of these changes, the SOS Porch Light has a new look as well. Not only has the newsletter been converted into an online blogspot, but it is also interactive and reader friendly. We encourage all members to leave comments, suggestions and feedback via the new format, in addition to any suggestions to help improve the lines of communication among members. We can also post pictures, so don't be camera-shy!

At this time we would like to share the following words from Marsha Yeager, former writer and editor of the SOS Porch Light:

"As I leave the position of editor of the 'Porch Light,’ I am reminded of lessons from my past. After graduating from college, I did an internship in medical technology in a Catholic hospital in Portland, Oregon. For the unfamiliar this curricula pertains to the various departments in a hospital laboratory – serology, urinalysis, hematology, bacteriology, chemistry, histology, cytology and blood bank.

As students during this exciting time, we were expected to learn the automated method of testing as well as to keep one foot in the past by being able to perform a test or procedure the original, manual, old-fashioned way. This distrust of automation by our teacher nuns served me well. In the medical profession there is an adage: 'See one; do one; teach one.' This is a reference to the method of teaching and passing on of knowledge.

See one. Sister Mary Patrick in drill sergeant precision would instruct the 'newbies,' (that would be me and my fellow classmates) to read the instructions on how to do blood sugars. She would say, 'Think of it as a recipe. Thoroughly read the instructions. Assemble all the ingredients and equipment and perform the test.' We would watch her deftly assemble pipettes, beakers, Folin-Wu tubes, chemicals, filter paper and the patients’ blood, never duplicating any movement and never losing her place as she recited aloud. As she performed the test, she explained each step and each chemical reaction that was going to take place. 'Next add the sodium hydroxide so that the reaction shuts down. Put the specimen into the colorimeter and read the percent concentration. That number we will convert into milligrams percent.'
Ta da. And remember it is always better to serve God than yourself,' which was a constant theme professed by all of our teachers during our internship.

Do one. It was my turn at the lab bench. Trying to remember the locations of all of the equipment and to have economy of steps, I set about to replicate my teacher. She made it seem so simple. As I poured chemicals, filtered, and spun things down in the centrifuge, she kept a close eye on my every move. I passed chemistry under her tutelage.

Teach one. Later when we were assigned lab partners, I got to play Sister Mary Patrick. Sweet revenge.

Long before my internship in medical technology, I had a splendid English teacher in high school. Mary Parker was her name. See one. She guided the class through the classics –Beowulf, Shakespeare, Chaucer, Moliere. 'See how the author has woven the parts of the story together from beginning to end. What is the author trying to teach us?' she would ask.

Do one. Write from the heart. Color the story so the reader can visualize what you are seeing. One day Mrs. Parker put a rock on her desk and told us to write a short story in 50 minutes about the rock. So began my interest in creative writing. Fast forward nearly 40 years. At this time I am a breast cancer survivor, and I wanted to help my support group stay together as a cohesive unit. I decided that an email newsletter would be good way of keeping in touch, and since I possess this untamed bursting-at-the-seams raw talent to write (Are you laughing?), I found my niche as a self-appointed newsletter editor. 'And remember it is always better to serve God than yourself.'

Teach one. This is one segment of the circuit I do not have to fulfill. Josie Sethi, SOS member and author of the pictorial essay, The Faces behind Breast Cancer, will be my successor. Josie has stated that she would like to take a more interactive approach to the newsletter via a blog spot (web log), and she hopes that everyone will come to enjoy the new format. One of the advantages of having a blog spot is that members can leave comments and provide updates throughout the month. I hope you will provide Josie with the same support and enthusiasm that you have shown me throughout my 3-year tenure."

Blessings,
Marsha Yeager

SOS PROFILE

The mission statement of SOS is "to ensure through information, empowerment, and peer support that no one faces breast cancer alone."

For newcomers to the group, here is a brief history of SOS:

Survivors Offering Support (SOS) was formed in 2002 after New Territory residents Janet Ely, Sara Plant, and (the late) Ronda Goodier met each other while being treated for breast cancer (BRCA). They had been driving to Katy to participate in a support group and soon realized that they were not alone in their diagnosis of BRCA within Sugar Land. They saw a need for a support group closer to their home.

SOS is a peer support group and is not affiliated with a hospital or cancer counseling organization. SOS's sole purpose is to provide emotional support to individuals currently undergoing treatment as well as cancer survivors. The group initially met on a monthly basis in the homes of its members. Due to increased interest in the support services offered, it has outgrown the original meeting arrangement.

Today, SOS has a permanent home within the education campus of Holy Cross Episcopal Church, where members meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Holy Cross Episcopal Church is located at 5653 West River Park Drive in the New Territory area of Sugar Land. (Directions below)

The SOS program does not have officers and is volunteer-based. We encourage all members to take an active role in helping to develop, define and organize monthly meetings in addition to mentoring, public relations and establishing new member contact.

Please note that formal meetings will continue to be held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month between October through February. We will skip March due to Spring Break and resume our scheduled meetings in April and May. June, July and August are reserved for our informal no-host luncheons and/or dinners at neighboring restaurants.

There are no stated dues, however a "Love Donation" is always welcome to help defray occasional expenses.

Newsletters are posted on a monthly basis with revisions updated on a weekly basis. Written contributions are encouraged and welcomed.

SOS SISTER UPDATE

Marcia Williamson
We wish fellow SOS Sister, Marcia Williamson a speedy recovery following her surgery last Friday morning and pray for good test results. Please send get-well wishes to: williamsontx@alltel.net
MARCIA's RESPONSE 9/24/2007
Hello Friends,
I am home recuperating from my surgery on Friday. It was a crazy few days leading up to it as they decided to cancel it, then it was back on again…I think that I was lost in the “system” and they had forgotten to schedule the pre op appointments. Long story short I accomplished them all in 9 hours the day before surgery!!!
The surgery was about 3 hours because they had to go back in for more clean margins. Even though the spots were small, they were harder to get to. They have cautioned me that there is a 20% chance they did not get everything which would indicate a mastectomy. Other than that news, I feel well and have a great deal of movement back. They took one lymph node and its being tested for cells. Please pray that it is clean, I don’t want to face chemo again.
Thanks for your prayers,
Love,Marcia

Julia Kerner
We also send get-well wishes to SOS sister and book participant, Julia Kerner who is on the mend after undergoing hand surgery. You can forward your sentiments to Julia at: shifter33t@comcast.net
